Masterclass Forum 2019
8–9 November 2019 • Warsaw, Poland
Map of location
The first Pfizer sponsored Masterclass Forum took place on 8–9 November 2019 in Warsaw, Poland, and gathered more than 300 international physicians from a range of specialties involved in the treatment of AF and VTE. The engaging and interactive two-day event comprised a mixture of plenary presentations, panel discussions and interactive case-based sessions, providing all delegates with the opportunity to discuss their everyday practice-based challenges.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our colleagues across the Region for arranging the attendance of their facilitators and delegates. Your support and engagement made this event a great success and we hope that this Masterclass help improve patient outcomes across our regions.

Summary
• For stroke prevention in NVAF patients as well as VTE treatment and prevention, meta-analyses of RCTs have shown NOACs to have improved efficacy and better or similar safety vs VKA
• Optimal patient outcomes are achieved when NOACs are used according to approved dosing recommendations
• Irrespective of successful cardioversion, anticoagulation should be continued according to stroke risk
• In patients with NVAF and ACS/PCI: NOACs in dual therapy with P2Y12 inhibitors have a better safety profile (less bleeding) and a similar efficacy compared with VKA in triple therapy with P2Y12 inhibitors and aspirin
• However, clinical challenges remain in daily clinical practice; those that have been discussed during this meeting include:
• How to implement current treatment and management guidelines
• Screening to avoid the first manifestation of NVAF by stroke
• How best to manage elderly/frail patients who require anticoagulation
• Secondary stroke prevention
• Acute VTE treatment: all NOACs are non-inferior to LMWH/VKA for reducing the risk of VTE/VTE-related death
• Management of recurrent VTE while on anticoagulation, as well as the VTE therapy length
• Treatment of fragile and obese patients
